Didcot

Didcot is located due south of the City of Oxford. It is also just a few miles from the Market Town of Abingdon.

Didcot itself is best known for the large power station in the town, and also for its railway heritage.

Although Didcot has its own proud industrial heritage, it is widely perceived as posh-Oxford's rather grubby neighbour. Swap Cotswold stone castle-like Colleges for Power Station Cooling Towers and electricity pylons. With the best will in the world, it just isn't as pretty. (We considered choosing a Didcot Power Station Cooling Tower for The Tower card in the Oxford Tarot Deck. These towers have great power and symbolism too, but we decided on Magdalen College Tower in the end.)

Now we can't resist mentioning one of those curious addressing situations. Over the years we've noticed that many businesses in this area - working in various fields, including everything from manufacturing, to professional services, to B&B - prefer to describe their location in or near to Didcot as, well, somewhere else - such as Abingdon, Wallingford, or even Henley !
Consider, for example Milton Park Business Centre. This is a fantastic facility with a pleasant atmosphere, excellent resources, and a wide range of thriving businesses. When we visited a company there we were thoroughly confused to see that our in-car GPS navigation system insisted on a route to Didcot despite the address of their Business Park location being a few miles away in Abingdon (GPS was right, of course)!

Here's to putting Didcot back on the map !
